We will find ways to let go of our preconceptions of how we are suppose to draw and unleash the inner scribbler. This is a wonderful opportunity to share how your dream life and your creative process is moving through you in the caring presence of a community of dreamers!

  • Learn a variety of warm up exercises and drawing experiments that help you fall into the practice of scribbling without preconception or judgement.  These exercises emphasize both seeing and expression as well the pleasure of making.
  • This is a gentle, fun interactive environment where participants can ask questions and seek guidance about sketching, which helps sketching become more enjoyable and relaxed.
  • Toward the end of the class, group members are invited to share their sketches, insights, or reflections as they feel called to do. This can be a marvelous and nourishing practice to experience the group being present to our process. Sharing is completely optional. Your presence is a form of sharing.

WARM UP and DRAWING EXPERIMENTS

Session I: MARK MAKING
Learn how to spontaneously make marks. Part of what can make drawing difficult is intention, preconception and control. Rather than attempting to draw something, this method helps you pile up spontaneous marks without effort or intention, which gives tremendous freedom to actually learn and explore. Being spontaneous has often been unlearned in our left-brained perfectionistic culture. This method gives you permission to experiment without the nuisance of preconceived boundaries.

Session II: FOLLOWING LIGHT & DARK
These exercises help you develop one of the many many facets of observation. Observation is truly a meditative exercise that can help us feel more regulated, calm, and enlivened. We will focus on different ways to see create depth and dimension by following light and dark.

Session III: EXPRESSING MOVEMENT
These exercises will help you sense the images more deeply and notice their overall movement and quality of aliveness. This helps you develop your kinesthetic awareness which allows you to draw in ways that your body inherently likes to draw.

Session IV: TRICKS and SHORT CUTS
My art instructor says, “Art is about learning to waste time.” So true! AND, sometimes I don’t have time and I still want to sketch. Every method or discipline deserves to be undisciplined! We’ll experiment with short cuts to everything we learned in the prior sessions. We’ll learn how to grab hold of bits of images using short-cuts often used in the fashion industry to illustrate ideas. This is a way to focus on color without worrying about developing form.
